New $88m big data CRC to boost Australia’s national security

The new Data to Decisions Cooperative Research Centre represents an investment of $88 million into Australia’s big data research effort over the next five years, with $25 million being contributed through the Cooperative Research Centres program, an Australian Government Initiative.
The Data to Decisions CRC (D2D CRC) is set to commence operations on 1 July 2014 to research and develop tools that seek to maximise the benefits of ‘big data’ for Australia’s defence and national security sector.

Three dedicated research program areas in data storage and management, analytics and decision support and policy for big data analysis will be supported by a collaborative education and training program.

The D2D CRC will benefit from the collaboration of over twenty different organisations which range from Government, Industry, Universities and Research Institutions throughout Australia whilst the D2D CRC will foster new relationships with leading US Universities and consulting groups.

Tim Scully, the D2D CRC Chair says, “the D2D CRC has the right team to lead pioneering,
transformational Big Data research to help the National Security Community make critical security decisions faster and more accurately.

“The D2D CRC will research and develop tools to maximise the benefits that Australia’s defence and national security sector can extract from big data. Addressing big data challenges and applying high- performance analytics can make the difference between predicting a threat and reacting to a catastrophic aftermath,”said Mr Scully.

Dr Sanjay Mazumdar, D2D CRC CEO says, “at its peak, the D2D CRC will employ around 40 full time equivalent staff, produce 50 PhD students, train over 1000 data scientists and leave a significant legacy to the national security of Australia.”

It is predicted the CRC will help to build a substantial big data industry that will position Australia as an international exemplar in the development and use of big data capability. The national headquarters is in South Australia with teams in Victoria and New South Wales.

About Data to Decisions CRC
The Data to Decisions CRC will research and develop robust tools to efficiently extract intelligence and unforeseen insights from “Big Data” within a balanced privacy paradigm. It will maximise the ability of Australia’s Defence and National Security agencies to make critical decisions faster and more accurately, helping to build a safer and more secure nation. By addressing this need, the D2D CRC will also build technology and a workforce that can be transitioned to other sectors to generate economic benefit in those markets.
